Colorado’s window tint law is one of the most-asked questions before booking. Here’s the 2026 breakdown.
The actual law (C.R.S. 42-4-227)
| Window | Minimum VLT | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Windshield | n/a | AS-1 strip only across the top |
| Front side windows | 27% | Both driver and passenger |
| Rear side windows | 27% | Lower limit than many other states |
| Rear window | Any darkness | Limo dark allowed |
Medical exemptions
Colorado allows medical exemption permits for film below 27% VLT on side windows. The application requires a physician statement and is processed by the Colorado Department of Revenue. If you have a verified exemption, bring the documentation and we’ll match the film to it — just let us know what you’re looking for and we’ll take care of it.

Enforcement
Colorado State Patrol and local PDs do issue citations for non-compliant tint. A modest moving-violation fine applies and the citation requires film removal or replacement before re-inspection. Polar Tint installs to spec.
