Quick answer
Colorado allows tint on the windshield only as a non-reflective strip across the top 4 inches. The strip can’t be red or amber, and the windshield overall must still let in at least 70% of light. The only windshield film Polar Tint Parker North installs is that legal top strip, and we don’t put film over camera arrays or sensor housings.
What does Colorado allow on the windshield?
Colorado’s tint statute (C.R.S. 42-4-227) allows a non-reflective tint strip across the top of the windshield, capped at 4 inches down from the top of the glass. The material can’t be red or amber, it can’t distort vision or obstruct the driver’s view, and the windshield overall must still allow at least 70% light transmittance. Below the strip, the windshield stays clear.
| Window | Colorado rule |
|---|---|
| Windshield | Non-reflective strip on the top 4 inches only; not red or amber |
| Front side windows | At least 27% VLT |
| Rear side windows and back window | At least 27% VLT; darker only if the windshield and front side windows let in at least 70% |

Is the 4-inch strip the same as the AS-1 line?
No. Some states measure the windshield strip to the AS-1 line marked on the glass. Colorado’s strip is a fixed 4 inches down from the top of the windshield, not tied to the AS-1 line. Tint that was legal in another state can need adjusting once the vehicle is registered and driven in Colorado, so we check the strip along with the side windows at your free estimate.
Does a windshield strip affect ADAS cameras?
Driver-assist cameras (forward collision warning, lane keep assist, automatic emergency braking) are mounted inside the windshield and look out through the camera area at the top of the glass. The only windshield film Polar Tint Parker North installs is the legal top strip, and we don’t put film over camera arrays or sensor housings, so that camera area stays clear. ADAS calibration is required after windshield replacement, which is done at glass shops; a tint film install does not trigger ADAS recalibration. More on this in Polar Tint’s guide to window tint and ADAS sensors.
What about the front side windows?
Colorado requires at least 27% VLT on the front side windows. The rear side windows and back window need at least 27% too, unless the windshield and front side windows let in at least 70%, in which case the windows behind the driver may be darker. Colorado has no medical exemption. Our ceramic window tint grades are installed to those limits.
